SALARY: $12.11 to $17.87 per hour



JOB PURPOSE


Position is responsible for the safety and care of all students including students with significant disabilities, special needs, and/or early childhood/kindergarten students while on a school bus. Reports to the Transportation Supervisor.



ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


Help students to safely board and exit the bus.


Secures student in safety harness, car seat or wheelchair, when required.


Safely and properly secures wheelchairs, car seats, and other specialized equipment on the bus as needed.


Operates wheelchair lift and any other specialized equipment.


Monitors students with feeding tubes, tracheotomies, oxygen and other unique medical needs to ensure that everything is operating properly and is secured.


Reports any unusual or changed behavior to the driver, school staff and/or parents.


Ensures that early childhood and kindergarten students are released to an authorized person.


Must be able to learn about and adapt to different disabilities and/or special needs.


Assist the bus driver in maintaining student discipline on the bus and enforcing rules governing student conduct. Reports student misconduct to school staff using designated incident report forms in accordance Transportation Department Handbook and the School District Code of Student Conduct.


Accurately maintains and provide written reports to transportation/school staff as needed/upon request on student attendance logs, bus incidents, student seating chart, and time sheets.


Assists the bus driver in conducting bi-annual bus evacuation drills and safely evacuating students.


Completes all prerequisite training necessary for the safe transportation of students.


Participates in all required training.


Assist the bus driver to ensure that the assigned bus is clean and safe.


Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.


Reports all safety violations to include co-workers/personnel suspected of drinking alcohol or under the influence of drugs (to include over-the-counter drugs) while working.


Performs any other related duties as required.



QUALIFICATIONS


  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have the ability to read, write and speak English in a clear, concise manner.
  • Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license.
  • Must possess knowledge of, or the ability to accurately and quickly learn, how to properly secure a wheelchair, car seat, and other specialized equipment on a school bus.
  • Must possess the ability to maintain student discipline and ensure that student behavior is not a distraction to the bus driver.
  • Must possess the ability to recognize and report any unsafe act or condition.
  • Must possess the ability to understand and follow through on oral and written instructions.
  • Must possess the ability to interact with unique students, parents, and faculty in a positive and proper manner.
  • Must be able to learn various special education categories.

  • Be able to rapidly activate the manual service door release valve, push open the service door and exit the bus, starting from a seated position within 15 seconds.
  • Be able to move rapidly through the interior of the bus and exit from the rearmost floor-level emergency door, starting from a seated position within 20 seconds.
  • Be able to drag individuals at least 125 pound in weight rapidly in a bus emergency 30 feet in 30 seconds.
  • Use strength to lift items needed to perform the functions of the job.
  • Sit, stand and walk for required periods of time.
  • Speak and hear.
  • Use close vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception along with the ability to focus vision.
  • Communicate effectively in English, using proper grammar and vocabulary. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
  • Reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers to handle objects and operate tools, technology equipment, computers, and/or controls.
